"Scrappy" is perhaps the best word to describe this fish. Due to its excellent taste and exciting fighting style, the smallmouth bass is an extremely saught after fish amongst northern anglers and is often the target fish of many fishing derbies.

The smallmouth inhabits a wide variety of underwater environments, tending to feed most often during dawn and dusk when it enters shallower waters to find its prey. Once hooked, smallmouth tend to jump into the air repeatedly in an effort to shake the hook loose. When the fish jumps, try to ease up on the line tension a little as this sometimes help prevent the hook from coming loose.
