The rock bass, contrary to its name, is not a bass but a sunfish. Like the bluegill and pumpkinseed, it has a laterally compressed body. Unlike the bluegill and pumpkinseed, the rock bass is not very colorful and has reddish/orange colored eyes, hence its nickname.
Clear water with a rocky bottom make up this fish's favorite type of habitat (and how it received the name "rock bass"). The rock bass tends to live in clusters and typically feeds on insects and small fish. Their spawning habits are extremely similar to that of bluegills and pumpkinseeds.
Rock bass, like other sunfish, put up a strong fight for their size, but tend to tire quickly. There are a large variety of ways to catch rock bass.
