Crappies are a popular game fish and are generally considered to be among the best tasting fresh water fish. They resemble your average sunfish, but have a larger than normal mouth. Black crappie are much darker than white crappie and have patterns of dark spots along their body.

Crappies have diverse diets. As adults, they mainly feed on young fish, but are known to feed on insects, crustaceans, and plankton. Crappie are most active during dawn and dusk. Most of the day is spent dormant in deep water or weed cover. Crappies are popular among ice fishers as well as they remain active all winter long.

Because of the Crappie's varying diet, they can be caught with a wide variety of techniques. Jigging is perhaps the most popular, but trolling, casting, or even bobber fishing can prove successful.
