Bluegills are easily identified by their laterally compressed body and the black flap near their gills. For their size, bluegills offer fishermen a good fight and are loved by both beginning and experienced anglers alike.
Bluegills, like their close relative the pumpkinseed, are most active during the daytime, and usually feed on insects and smaller fish. Their classic habitat consists of clear water with some sparse vegitation in about five to fifteen feet of water. Bluegill spawn in the spring, moving into shallow waters (as shallow as 6 inches deep even) where they build their nests.
Jigging with live bait tends to work well for bluegill. Bluegill are also often caught with the classic bobber and worm combo. Artificial lures can work as well, but are usually not as successful. Take extra care when handling bluegills in the boat as the fins along their spines are quite sharp.
